Sailing the Aegean: Understanding the Meltemi & Our Safety Commitment
Sailing in the Aegean Sea offers some of the world’s most beautiful waters, but it is also defined by the Meltemi, a powerful seasonal northern wind that dominates the summer months. At our company, we prioritize your safety above all else, which is why we have established a strict operational limit: we do not sail if forecasts predict winds above 30 knots or gusts exceeding 35 knots.
What is the Meltemi?
The Meltemi (or Etesian winds) is a dry, strong northerly wind caused by a high-pressure system over the Balkans and a low-pressure thermal trough over Turkey
* Intensity: While often a pleasant breeze, the Meltemi can rapidly intensify to Force 7–8 on the Beaufort scale (28–48 knots), with gusts frequently exceeding 50 knots
* Duration: Unlike many winds that die down at night, the Meltemi can blow continuously for 3 to 10 days, maintaining high speeds around the clock
* Peak Season: The wind is most frequent and strongest in July and August, though it can occur from June to September
Why Our Safety Limits Matter
The unique geography of the Aegean amplifies the wind's power. As the wind is channelled through narrow straits between islands (such as between Paros/Naxos or Andros/Evia), speeds can jump significantly higher than regional forecasts suggest. Within six hours of a 30-knot wind event, waves can exceed 3 meters, becoming dangerously steep when combined with adverse currents.
Our policy of cancelling or altering itineraries when forecasts approach 30 knots average / 35 knots gusts is designed to:
* Protect Passengers: Prevent motion sickness, injury, and the stress of sailing in rough seas.
* Ensure Stability: Our vessels are safe in moderate winds, but the combination of high gusts and steep waves in the Cyclades exceeds safe operating parameters for comfort and security.
* Provide Flexibility: We monitor hourly forecasts and are prepared to adjust routes to sheltered bays or delay departures if conditions deteriorate.
What to Expect on Your Trip
* Clear Skies: The Meltemi brings dry air, excellent visibility, and brilliant blue skies, making for stunning photography.
* Cooler Temperatures: The wind provides a refreshing cooling effect, preventing the extreme heat often felt in other Mediterranean regions.
* Dynamic Sailing: For experienced sailors, the wind offers consistent power, but for leisure cruising, it requires respect and adaptability.
* Protected Anchorages: Our crew is experts in identifying sheltered bays (lee side of islands) where the wind is significantly calmer, ensuring a peaceful evening even when the open sea is rough.
Our Commitment to You
We believe that a safe journey is the best journey. By adhering to our strict 30/35-knot limit, we ensure that your Greek sailing holiday remains an unforgettable adventure of relaxation and discovery, not a test of endurance against the elements. If the weather dictates, we will reschedule your passage or find a safer, equally beautiful alternative—because your safety is our non-negotiable priority.
