Meltemi winds are strong, predictable northerly winds that blow over the Aegean Sea in the summer months (June–September). They can reach force 7–8 on the Beaufort scale and sometimes pick up surprisingly quickly. For us, that is a reason to plan carefully, stay flexible, and always put safety first.
Poros
That is exactly why we chose to base ourselves in Poros. Poros is located in the Saronic Gulf and not directly in the main path of the Meltemi, which mainly affects the open Aegean and areas such as the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. The bay of Poros is also very sheltered and offers safe anchorages, even when it is blowing hard elsewhere or when other weather systems are passing through.
When we plan a trip, we look not only at wind strength, but also at wind direction, current forecasts, and possible changes throughout the day. We take into account any cancellations or delays of ferries and excursions, and we deliberately build buffer time into the schedule. This allows us to adjust routes or plan a rest day if the weather turns, without compromising safety or the experience on board.
For our guests, this means they can enjoy sailing in Greece with full respect for the power of nature, but without unnecessary risk. From Poros we explore the islands of the Saronic Gulf and beyond, always with a keen eye on the weather charts, local information from harbour masters, and our own experience.
The Meltemi sometimes creates spectacular conditions for experienced surfers and sailors, but for relaxed holiday sailing our focus comes down to three things: flexibility, solid weather management, and safety before schedules. By having our home base in sheltered Poros, we can offer exactly that: the charm of the Greek islands, with the calm and reassurance of a safe harbour.
